Some people believe you are either an optimist or a pessimist, but I believe there is a third type of person: a realist.
What is wrong with looking at a situation and weighing the pros and cons? Every situation can not end with a rainbow. Is that a bad thing? I don't think so. You have to know how sad feels before you can feel happy and vice versa.
If I'm planning a day at the park, and I see a big dark cloud in the sky. I don't immediately think, "Oh, no! My day is ruined." But I do take an umbrella because there is a chance that it's going to rain. Does that make me a bad person?
My family accuses me of always expecting the worse and never having faith. They couldn't be more wrong. I absolutely do have faith. I have faith that God gave me the brains to figure out I need an umbrella!
I have to say, I completely agree with everything you are saying. I am also a realist. I like to strive and hope for the best but prepare for the worst. I don't believe there is anything wrong with weighing the pros and cons of a situation. If you don't, how will you be prepared for that rainy day? Disappointment and disaster happen in life. If you go through life thinkings it is perfect all the time then you are going to be extremely shocked and probably extremely upset when disaster does strike. My mother says to this day she wishes she did not raise her kids to think the world was perfect. When we all grew up and disaster struck we were completely unprepared. I believe a realist is the best optimist.
ReplyDeleteYou have a clear view of reality. I expect the worst just so that I will be prepared. If life gives you lemons, make lemonade! Keep it real!!
